Mary Lou Halvorson, 64, of Waukon died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 19 at 1 p.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, assisted with arrangements.
Mary Lou Jeide Halvorson was born September 16, 1945 in Waukon, the daughter of Elmer Simon and Alma Amelia (Krumme) Jeide. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ (UCC) in Waukon, where she remained a life-long member, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1963. Following school, Mary Lou worked as a waitress at the Cliff House Restaurant in Decorah. Later she worked as a secretary at Farm Bureau Insurance in Waukon and Lloyd Schroeder Insurance in Postville.
May 22, 1971 she married Herbert Edward Halvorson, Jr. at Zion UCC. After marriage she spent a few years as a busy mother and homemaker while her children were young. For the past 30 years, Mary Lou has worked at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, starting at the switchboard, moving on to the office, and then to her current duties in the insurance billing department.
Mary Lou was an active volunteer at many Veterans Memorial Hospital projects and functions. She was a staunch supporter and participant in Relay For Life events sponsored by the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed going to flea markets, garage sales and swap meets, and was an avid sports fan, following stock car races, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Green Bay Packers. She liked going for walks and preferred staying active, but when she couldn’t be on the go, she enjoyed working crossword and Sudoku puzzle books and cooking. Many of her favorite times were spent following the activities of her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert Halvorson, Jr. of Waukon; five children, Connie (Dave) Gordon, Cindy (Brian) Bodensteiner, and Cherie Halvorson, all of Waukon, Clark (Anita) Halvorson of Cresco, and Christine Halvorson of Winona, MN; seven grandchildren, Kevin, Katelyn, and Kyle Gordon, Seth Bodensteiner, Alyssa and Nathan Halvorson, and Kelsey Schulte; two step-grandchildren, Celena and Hanna Bodensteiner; a sister, June (Raymond) Taylor of Cedar Rapids; her mother-in-law, Lorine Halvorson of Waukon; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Bella Bodensteiner; two brothers, Duane and Lyle Jeide; and a half-brother, Keith Jeide.
Honorary casketbearers were her co-workers and friends from Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Casketbearers were Kevin and Dave Gordon, Brian Bodensteiner, Gerald Taylor, Randy Halvorson, and Charlie Rolfs.
