Minerva R. Strong, 98, of Lansing died Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Thornton Manor Care Center in Lansing. Services were held Tuesday December 22, 2009 at the United Methodist Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Lansing.
Minerva was born January 24, 1911 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI to John and Mabel (Worby) Larson. She met Alfred (Ted) Strong in 1933 while visiting her sister, Sfa Lankford, in Lansing. Their friendship blossomed into love and in 1935 Ted traveled to the rural Beaver Dam, WI farm of Minerva’s parents, where the couple married on Minerva’s birthday, January 24. She worked for the Lansing Button Company for over 30 years, first working out of her home carding buttons by hand, and later at the factory until her retirement.
Minerva was a member of the Lansing United Methodist church, was very active with the Lansing Senior Citizens group for many years and was a former member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting, embroidery and needlepoint and sharing her many creations with family and friends. She was a volunteer at Thornton Manor for many years and enjoyed playing euchre and bingo with the residents.
In her earlier days she enjoyed baking for her family, making wedding cakes, ceramics, and made the best cream puffs in the world. For many years she and Ted enjoyed the company of her siblings (the “Goon Girls” and their spouses) on their many trips, especially on the V-Hive Houseboat.
She is survived by a son, John “Jack” (Ruth) Strong of Madison, WI; a daughter, Wanda (John) Hisel of Lansing; four grandchildren, Jay (Jeannine) Hisel of Lansing, Lori (Steve) Lockwood of Mayville, WI, Daniel (Marci) Strong of Madison, WI, and Donald (Heather) Strong of Sun Prairie, WI; nine great grandchildren, Jesse, Emily and Samuel Hisel, Ian and Joshua Lockwood, Samantha and Bethany Strong, and Braedon and Dane Strong; one step-great-grandson, Skylar Bacon; and nieces, nephew, and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ted, in 1983; her grandson, David Strong, in 1995; two brothers, Gerald and Carl (Doris) Larson; and four sisters, Sfa (Albert) Lankford, Janette Larson, DeElda Guile Johnson, and Grace (Harold) Verdon.
