Funeral services for Leo Foels were held Thursday, December 28, 2000 at 10;30 a.m. in the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Gary Catterson officiated. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casketbearers are Jim Foels, Leo Norden, Marvin Berg, Dennis Friederich, David Kamaus, Lane Friederich, Michael Friederich, Gregg Klepper, Allen Friederich.
Leo Frederick Adolph Foels, the son of Arthur F. Foels and Elizabeth (Wilke) Foels, was born June 29, 1917 on a farm northeast of Postville in Post Township, Allamakee County, near Postville, Iowa. He passed away Saturday in Palmer Lutheran Health Center at West Union, Iowa. He had reached the age of 83 years, five months and 24 days.
Leo attended the Minert Country School and was graduated from Postville High School in 1935. He served in the US Army during World War II. On November 20, 1942 he was married to Dorothy Jean Friederich at the Presbyterian Parsonage at Postville, Iowa by the Rev. Newhouse. To this union three sons and one daughter were born.
The couple lived in California and the Tacoma, Washington area while Leo was serving in the military. They returned to Postville where they farmed on a farm northeast of Postville in Post Township. They moved to their home in Postville in 1973, where Leo drove the school bus for many years. He raised the flag at the local football games and faithfully attended the Veterans Day programs at the school. Leo enjoyed spending time with his family, spent many hours fishing and playing cards, and was the local Santa Claus for many years. He has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville for the last 2 and half years.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy, three sons, Terry A. (Jan) Foels of rural Postville, Iowa, Thomas W. (Oma) Foels of Stillwater, Minnesota, Tennis L (Diane) Foels of rural Postville, Iowa, and a daughter, Tamara L. Jenkins of Princeton, West Virginia; three grandchildren, Andrea Jo Foels, Jeffrey Thomas Foels and Jeanne Eleanor Foels; step grandchildren, Brian (Eva) Olson and Bruce (Erika) Olson and step great grandchildren, Brett, Blake, Emily, Blane, and Patience Olson and Kaitlyn and Brady Olson; one sister, Ruby Norden, of Brooklyn, Iowa, and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Foels, of Victor, Iowa.
Leo was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, having served on the Session, the Board of Deacons, and as a Trustee. He had been a member of the American Legion Post 518 for more than 50 years, serving as Commander, Vice Commander and Chaplain and also as the Allamakee County Commander. He was on the Board of Directors for the Postville Creamery, the Northeast Iowa Dairy Cooperative, and the Northstar Dairy of St. Paul, Minnesota. He was a member of the Postville School Bus Drivers Association and served for over 30 years on the Board of Directors for the German Farmers Mutual Insurance company at Waukon, Iowa.
