Obituary for James S. Mooney in the Allamakee Journal newspaper of October 28, 1959 reads:

Funeral Services Held for James S. Mooney

Lansing residents were shocked last Wednesday at noon time when the little Conway girl, Ellen, went to the James Mooney home on upper Main St. and he was found dead. It had been the custom of the Conway children to go there for their noon meal each day while several of them attended schools in town.

The county coroner happened to have been called here for a duck hunter who was presumed dead but such was not the case and he deemed no inquest necessary in the Mooney death as he had been under a doctor’s care and death was presumable from a heart case. It was not determined how long he was dead but thought to be several hours or more.

James Mooney was born September 2nd, 1876 in Lafayette township, a son of Katherine Brennan and Thomas Mooney and was educated in the rural schools of that community.

He farmed and operated a saw mill as well as threshing crew for years before coming to make his home in Lansing about forty years ago.

His first wife was Mary Duffy of Emmetsburg and following her death he later married Anna Conway. She passed away in October of 1955. Immediate survivors are one brother, Eugene Mooney of Lafayette township, an adopted sister, Mrs. Helen Purzastck, Algona; step-children, Leo Conway of Alaska, Hugh Conway of Lafayette, and Mrs. Eugene Weil, of Racine, Wis. besides a number of nieces and nephews with whom he was always a favorite.

Father Gerald Condon offered the Mass of Requiem at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing on Saturday morning at nine o’clock and said the final prayers at the graveside in Gethsemane Cemetery where interment was made. Active casket bearers were Michael Madden, Francis Kernan, Elmer Callahan, Joe Conway, Harold and Gerald Mooney. Honorary pall bearers were Theodore Kerndt, Gene Brennan, Hugo Fritz, Henry Beck, Cyril Hurm and Joseph Mullen. Among the out of tow relatives and friends here for the funeral services were Mrs. Eugene Weil, Racine, Wis.; Mrs. Mary Sboleski, Milwaukee, Wis.; Mrs. Jean Moparta and son John, Mauston, Wis.; Mrs. Elizabeth Conway, Elroy, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Putzstuck of Algoma and daughter, Mrs. John Hamilton and husband of Titonka; Attorney and Mrs. Joe O’Regan of Chicago.

The Bert Putzsticks and John Hamiltons were in Lansing last week for the funeral of Jim Mooney, brother of Mrs. Putzstick.
