Mary R. Duffy Mooney (died July 14, 1931. Obituary from the Allamakee Journal newspaper of July 15, 1931 reads:

Obituary – Mrs. James Mooney

As briefly announced in these columns last week, the death of this estimable lady took place last Tuesday, July 14, at 9:50 p.m. She had been in poor health for the past 14 years, suffering a paralytic stroke six years ago, and several since, the last one coming about two days previous to her death, and from which she never rallied.

Deceased’s maiden name was Mary Duffy, and she was born at Emmetsburg, Iowa, April 27, 1884, being aged 47 years, 2 months and 27 days at the time of her death. On Oct. 31, 1893, at Ayrshire, Iowa, she was married to James Mooney, by Father Carroll. They came back to Allamakee at once and made their home on the groom’s farm in Lafayette until June, 1920, when they moved to Lansing, and have since resided here.

Besides the bereaved husband, she leaves to mourn her aged father, Patrick Duffy, of Emmetsburg; one sister, Mrs. Ed. Nolan, Ayrshire; and two brother, Thomas, Grettinger, Iowa; and John, Rugby, N. D. ; all of whom were present at her funeral. A host of local relatives and friends will also grieve at her passing.

Mrs. Mooney was a true Christian woman, a devoted wife, kind neighbor and true friend. He was a devout Catholic, and died fortified by the last rites of Mother Church.

The funeral took place at I. D. church Thursday morning, at 9:30 o’clock, Msgr. G. L. Haxmeier chanting Requiem Mass. St. Rita’s Court of Lady Foresters, to which she belonged, attended in a body, acting as an escort from the home to the church, marching a ahead of the cortege. At the conclusion, Mr. Holmes and the choir sang “Mary, Dearest Mother.” Her pall bearers were six of her nephews, Leo, Elmer and Vincent Callahan, Harold, Raymond and Gerald Mooney. Burial was made in Gethsemane cemetery.

Out of town relatives in attendance were her aunt, Mrs. Steve Flynn and son Gene, Montrose., S. D.; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Burt Patzstuck, Wesley, Iowa; and niece, Mrs. Sherman Hart, Waukon; besides the host of local relatives and friends, which nearly filled the big church.
