Funeral services for Mark Penrod were held Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. Gary Catterson of Community Presbyterian Church and Robert Hupp, Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, officiated. Patricia Miene was the organist and Kim Schutte was the soloist. Casket Bearers were: Jed Dean, Sam Sadler, Jared Turner, Trent Turner, Jesse Reinhardt, Ryan Schultz, Eric Marsh, and Neil Sass. Honorary Casket Bearers were: Michael Penrod, Gary Hirth, Wayne Hirth, Doug Sass, Aaron Anderson, Josh Holthaus, and Cory Kirkestue. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
Mark Lee Penrod, the son of Robert O. Penrod and Patricia Marie (Brandenburg) Penrod, was born February 2, 1979, in Palmer Memorial Hospital in West Union, Iowa. He died Friday, November 10, 2000 as the result of a vehicular accident which occurred in Allamakee County, Iowa. He was 21 years old.
Mark was baptized and confirmed at Community Presbyterian Church in Postville. He graduated from Postville High School in 1997.
Mark participated in football and wrestling during high school, and was a member of the Future Farmers of America Chapter. He enjoyed snowmobiling and driving the four-wheeler. He liked to take trips and to spend time with his friends.
On October 7, 2000 Mark was married to Megan Kleve in St. Paul Lutheran Church by the Rev. Robert Hupp. They moved into a house on East Williams Street, where he took great pride in caring for their first home. He had just finished wiring their garage this past week. Mark was looking forward to becoming a new father later this year.
Mark was always busy with his tools on some project or other. He could be found during the summer months mowing lawn for his parents, grandmother, and neighbors. Mark took good care of his F250 pickup truck and the milk truck he drove for Hirth Haulers of Waukon.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Arno and Iva Brandenburg, his paternal grandfather, Robert T. Penrod, and an uncle, Floyd Penrod.
Surviving are his wife, Megan, his parents, Patricia and Robert Penrod, one brother, Michael Penrod and his wife, Julie, of Cedar Rapids, a sister, Mary Penrod of Postville, a nephew and a niece, Tyler and Alyssa Penrod of Cedar Rapids, his father-and mother-in-law, Jerald and Mary Kleve of rural Postville, and two special childhood friends, Jared and Jesse.
____________________________________________POSTVILLE MAN DIES IN ACCIDENT NEAR ROSSVILLE
Mark Penrod, 21, of Postville was killed Friday afternoon in a two vehicle accident near Rossville.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Penrod was hit by a pickup driven by Earl Hammell, 31, of New Albin. Hammell was driving west on Old Rossville Road when he failed to yield at a stop sign. The accident occurred one and a half miles west of Rossville. Penrod was driving a milk truck north on Red School Road when he was hit by the Hammell pickup.
Mark, an employee of Hirth Haulers of Waukon, had one stop left on his milk route before finishing his day's work.
The son of Robert and Patty Penrod, Mark had married his high school sweetheart, Megan, in October. The couple was looking forward to the birth of their baby in December.
Mark's mother Patty said he was a dedicated husband and son who enjoyed working on vehicles and readying their home for the new baby. He took great pride in any job he undertook and was working diligently to get everything done before the baby arrived.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran with Pastors Robert Hupp and Gary Catterson officiating. The complete obituary may be found on page six of today's paper.
Hammell remains hospitalized at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse where he was listed in stable condition. The accident remains under investigation.

The family of Mark Lee Penrod would like to express sincere thanks for the many acts of kindness by neighbors, friends, relatives and classmates. All the cards, memorials, flowers and food brought were very much appreciated. Thanks to Pastor Catterson and Hupp for the service and all those that were involved with the service in any way. Especially a very grateful thanks to Mark's close friends. A thank you to all those that brought in food, the Schutte Funeral Service (Dave and Karen) for helping with all the details that needed to be taken care of. A big thank you to the co-workers at Monona Vet Clinic, Northern Engraving, City of Calmar, Larry's Plumbing and Heating, PitStop, and to NICC for being so supportive for us. Also thanks to the Waukon Fire Department and Ambulance, Allamakee County Sheriff's Department and the Iowa State Patrol for handling a difficult situation professionally.
We want to give a very special thanks to Mark's employer, the Hirth family-Gary, Lollie, Wayne, Diane, and the kids. Mark was treated more like a family member than an employee. He drove "top-notch" equipment. Mark loved his job and the people he worked for. They were with us the entire time at the hospital, our homes and still somehow managed to keep their business running, offering continued support and concern the whole time. Thanks to the employees of Foremost Farms and all of Mark's patrons for sharing stories about him.
We want to give a special thanks to some close friends: Keith and Margaret Burrett, Deb McGeough, Kathy and Jared Turner, Darwin and Marilyn Ellis, Jessie Reinhardt, Dorothy Looney, Barb and Jess Kruse, Jed Dean, Trent Turner, Brad Snitker, Tasha Deering, Katrina Schultz, Danielle Livingood, Bobbie Everman, Allison Meyer, Sally Bacon, Jodi Erickson, Kristie Radloff, Erin Kuehl, Lance Schutte and all the rest of our close friends who we would like to acknowledge. We understand that we've probably missed some people but please know that we are truly grateful for what everyone has done for us.
We miss Mark, but he lives on through his baby daughter, Cassidy. She is truly a gift from God. We leave you with this poem:
