Roger Powell

Memorial services for Roger Powell, age 65, were held at 11 a.m. on Wed., April 11, 2001, at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church in Torrington, WY, under the direction of Rev. Peggy Brown. Burial of the cremations was a private family service the following day in Valley View Cemetery in Torrington.

Roger died of cancer on April 8, 2001, at his home in Torrington. He was born April 26, 1935, in Allamakee County, the son of Louis and Ethel (Enyart) Powell. He grew up and received his elementary education in the rural schools of Allamakee County. He was baptized and confirmed in Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Dorchester. He graduated from high school in Spring Grove, MN. Roger earned the rank of Sgt., as he served eight years in the army reserves, two of which were spent in Korea.

Lois Burr was Roger's first wife. The couple had two daughters. They later divorced. Roger married Mildred Vozenelek in 1962. She died of cancer in 1992. On June 12, 1993 he married Beverly Provencio in Cedar Rapids.

Roger was employed for many years at Wilson Packing Plant in Cedar Rapids, working his way up to machinist. After the plant closed, he sold insurance for Mutual of Omaha and later worked for Parks and Recreation in Cedar Rapids. He retired in Oct., 1998, and the following month he and Beverly moved to Torrington, WY.

Roger loved to sing and play guitar, work in his yard, raise a garden and can or freeze the vegetables, and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the First Wyoming Presbyterian Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Torrington.

Roger is survived by his wife; daughters Debbi (Mike) Fuller of Alamagordo, NM, and Jeannie (Mike) Rhoades of High Rolls, NM; a sister, Mildred (Owen) Myhre of Dorechester; brothers Lyle (Delores) Powell of Milwaukee, WI, and Robert Powell of Charles City; seven grandchildren, Dustin, Elijah, and Sarah Rhoades, Christopher and Joshua Heath, and Carissa and Desirae Fuller; one great-grandchild; two aunts and two uncles; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families; and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife; and one nephew, Russell Myhre.

Colyer Funeral Home of Torrington was in charge of arrangements.
