Esther A. Kolsrud, 93, of Waukon, died Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Friday, December 13 at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, with Rev. Harvey Abrahamson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements. Esther Alice Gjefle, was born on July 6, 1909, in Jefferson Township, Allamakee County. Her parents were Erick and Anna (Larson) Gjefle. She was baptized and confirmed at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church, and attended Jefferson #1 rural school. On November 8, 1933, she married Tennis Alfred Kolsrud in Dubuque. They farmed in rural Waukon until moving to Dubuque in 1952. While there, she was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Esther continued living in Dubuque until 1995 when she moved back to Waukon, where she was a member of West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church.
She was good at knitting and crocheting, and had made all of her grandchildren afghans. She also enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and keeping track of her television stories. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves fan and also followed the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce (Lloyd) Snitker of Postville; a daughter-in-law, Susan Kolsrud of Independence; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tennis; a son, James; six brothers, Louis, Emil, Otto, Theodore, Melvin, and Olaf Gjefle; and six sisters, Gusta Kelly, Selma Mork, Ida Thorstenson, Hannah McClintock, Mathilda Kruse, and Emma Gjefle. Honorary casketbearers were Chris and Loras Rave, Sharon Feickert, Sheryl Huinker, and Robert Kolsrud. Casketbearers were Scott, Steven, Brian, and Brad Snitker, Jeff Feickert, and Joey Huinker.ŠPostville Herald-Leader 2002
