Lydia Hawkins, 76, of Harpers Ferry, died Friday, December 13, 2002, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday, December l6 at St. Ann's/St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was in St. Joseph's Paint Rock Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Lydia Anne Anderson was born on January 21, 1926, in Trenton, N.J. Her parents were Andrew and Nellie Anderson. She attended elementary and high school in Lake Hurst, N.J., She served in the U.S. Army during 1942 and 1943 as a nurse, seeing most of her duty in Alabama. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Denver, Colo., as an adult. On October 2, 1953, she married Marvin Hawkins in Paso Robles, Calif. They lived in Tacoma, Wash., a short time before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1954, where she worked at Rockwell Collins for many years before retiring in 1984. They moved to Harpers Ferry in 1985 and have lived there ever since. Lydia was a member of St. Ann's/St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She was also a member and past commander of the Harpers Ferry American Legion Post 4722. She enjoyed being outdoors and spending as much on the river fishing as she could. Survivors include her husband, Marvin of Harpers Ferry; two daughters, Linda (Kenneth) Hahn of Loveland, Ohio, and Betty (Donald) Thurnall of Cincinnati, Ohio; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers. She is preceded in death by her parents.
