John A. Regan Sr., 78, of Waukon, died Friday, December 13, 2002, at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis., following complications of heart surgery. Funeral services were held Monday, December 16 at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon, with Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, assisted with arrangements. John Arthur Regan Sr. was born August 12, 1924, in Waukon, the son of Maurice and Cecilia (Howes) Regan. He was baptized at St. Patrick's and confirmed at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic churches. John attended Lycurgus rural elementary school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1943. On January 15, 1947, he married Kathleen "Kay" Hovden at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah. John and Kay have farmed together in the Lycurgus area ever since. He loved the farming life and was happiest spending time with the livestock and working the land. John was a member of St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church and the Farm Bureau. He loved music and dancing. He and Kay were active square dancers for several years. He also enjoyed taking bus trips with Kay, spending time with his family, and visiting relatives. Survivors include his wife Kathleen "Kay" of Waukon; two sons, John A. Regan Jr. and James T. Regan, both of Waukon; four daughters, Ann (Edward) Roed of Waukon, Chris (Dennis) Hovden of Ridgeway, Margaret (Patrick) Johnson of Johnson City, Tenn., and Laurie (Craig) Zadra of Rice Lake, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn (George) Dresselhaus of McGregor. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Connie; a grandson, Jacob; two sisters, Mary Hodina and Helen Rowe; and a brother, William Regan. Honorary casketbearers were Marlene, Thea, Rose, Amy, and Rachel Regan and Blake Zadra. Casketbearers were Jack and Mike Regan and Brad, Andrew, David, and Troy Hovden.
