John Frederick Buckman was born Sept 17, 1837, in Oldenburg, Germany, the son of Frederick Buckman and Sophia Tuemler and came to America with his parents and landed in Baltimore in 1839. He lived in Franklin county, Indiana, until 1854 and then came to Iowa by the way of Ohio and the Mississippi River by boat and lived in Read township with his parents until he was married to Fredericke Otting on Sept. 30, 1866. They then moved to Farmersburg township where he has made his home ever since. To this union were born five children as follows: Fred and Henry on the home farm and William married to Anna Harnack, of near Farmersburg; Emma married to Henry Palas of Luana, and Mahala who preceded him in death 43 years ago; also nine grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister. His age at the time of his death was 9 years, 6 months, and 26 days.
