BELOVED LANSING MOTHER TAKEN SUNDAY FOLLOWING FATAL HEART ATTACK

One of Lansing’s best known and best loved mothers, Mrs. George W. Metcalf , was taken in death at the Lutheran hospital, La Crosse, Sunday night, May 12th, following a heart attack from which she failed to rally.

The passing of this devoted wife and loving mother on Mother’s Day was symbollic of her married life of nearly 60 years and her tender care for her family, all of whom now have grown to maturity.

Evelyn Strong was born February 25, 1857 at Savavnnah, Illinois, and when only a young girl came to Allamakee County with her parents, at the time of the Civil War. She was educated in the Lansing schools and July 3, 1875 she was married to George W. Metcalf, for many years an editor of the Lansing Mirror, and one of Northern Iowa’s prominent weekly newspaper publishers. To this union were born Mrs. (Edna) H.M. Matteson, Boston, Mass,; H.J. Metcalf and Walter Metcalf of Des Moines, George Metcalf of Lansing and another child which died in infancy. The four children, husband, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren survive. All of the children visited their mother in her final illness, and were close at hand at the time of her death..

Other survivors are brothers Joe and Herbert Strong of Ashton, Idaho; Edward Strong of Salt Lake City, Utah; Harold Strong of Long Beach, California; George of American Falls, Idaho; Harriet of Eugene, Oregon and a sister Anna of Payson, Idaho.

Mrs. Metcalf was one of the charter members of the old Methodist Church Guild of Lansing. She joined the M.E. church September 20, 1874.

Until her final illness, which began two months ago, resulting in five weeks in bed in Lansing, followed by several more weeks in the La Crosse hospital, Mr. and Mrs. Metcalf were planning on observing their sixtieth wedding anniversary, the date of which would have been July 3rd, only a few weeks away.

This pioneer Lansing woman will be missed, not only by her numerous relatives, but by a host of friends, young and old, all of whom will remember in happy memory the kindly smile and the encouraging, cheerful word which Mrs. Metcalf always had for all with whom she came in contact.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Lansing Federated church, with interment in Oak Hill cemetery, beside one of the Allamakee hills she loved so well. Reverend H.J. Noeding officiated.

Out of town friends and relatives other than the immediate family who attended were: Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Bliss and Clinton Metcalf, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. F.R. Riechers, Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Withrow, of La Crosse.

Pallbearers were: H.W. and E. B. Gaunitz, George Aschom, W.K. Fellows, Albert Kehr and Fred Shafer.
