William H. Brooks

William Herbert Brooks, second son of John M. and Carrie L. Brooks, was born in Franklin township, Allamakee county, Iowa, March 28th, 1897. His early life was that of the average farm boy, first in school, then working on a farm, and engaging in the pleasures of boyhood. On September 5th, 1918 he went to camp Dodge as one of the great army preparing for war. Later at Camp Beouregard, Louisana he was placed in the medical corps at Base Hospital No. 121.

In November 1918 he went to Camp Beau Desert, France, where he contracted the disease which finally ended his life. On his return to America, he again took up farm work, which he continued to follow until unable to work.

June 16th, 1920, he was united in marriage with Gladys Huffman, who, with five children are bereaved of husband and father.

In November, 1925, the family moved to Wisconsin where they engaged in farming near Ladysmith, but was obliged to give it up on account of failing health, After three months of suffering he fell peacefully asleep September 6, 1927, aged 30 years, 5 months and 8 days.

He was a cheerful, spirited man not willing to give up even when disease had sapped his strength.

A loving faithful husband and father, planning to the last for the best interests of those depending
upon him. He leaves father and mother, two brothers and a sister, Mrs. John Ralston of this county.

The funeral services were held at the U. B. church, Forest Mills, Rev. Van Nice officiating and the body was laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery.
