Donnie Paul Hansmeier, 84, of Waukon died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 29 at 11 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Marie Paterik officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, October 28 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Donnie Paul Hansmeier was born April 17, 1924 on the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon farm of his parents, Paul Simon and Mary (Becker) Hansmeier. He was baptized at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Donnie attended Ludlow #4 rural school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1941. Following school he started farming, first with his parents and later on his own south of Waukon. Throughout his farming career he enjoyed sharing work and equipment with his cousins as they helped each other on their various farms. Although he moved off the farm later in life, he liked to visit often and stay as active as he could helping with things. Since 1996 he has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.
Donnie was an avid and accomplished bowler, participating in the local leagues as well as traveling with his team to several tournaments in the area. In his younger days he played baseball on the town team. He enjoyed playing pool, loved to play euchre with his friends, and was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. Donnie enjoyed being around people. He appreciated spending time with the many friends he made through his activities and always looked forward to getting together with family.
Survivors include a sister, Jane Schneider of Waukon; a nephew, Tom (Karen) Regan of Waukon; five nieces, Ann (Kevin) Quillin of Waukon, Mary Beth Regan of Roseville, MN, Linda (Brad) Winkie of Waukon, Connie (Ken) Kurth of Rochester, MN, and Dawn (Jeff) Rathai of Owatonna, MN; and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alice Regan; and two brothers-in-law, Joe Regan and Paul Schneider.
Honorary casketbearers are Larry Magner, Tom Baxter, Gordon Hansmeier, Bennie Fiet and Vince Mathis. Casketbearers are Jason Quillin, Brad Winkie, Ronald Opfer, and Jerry, Abe and Noah Regan.
