Pioneer Mother Passes:

Mrs. Mary E. Beardmore
Mary Elizabeth Beardmore was born February 18,1862, the daughter of William and Mary Sadler, pioneer residents of Union City township, and passed to her reward April 23, 1933, in the Lutheran hospital at La Crosse,Wis., at the age of 71 years,2 months and 5 days.

After finishing school at the old English Bench schoolhouse, she completed her education at Waukon and at the Breckenridge college at Decorah, after which she taught school for a time.

In 1883 she was married to William Beardmore, who departed this life August 27,1925. She possessed a high degree of literary and musical talent, which gave her power in influencing the lives of those with whom she came in contact.

She lived a life of sacrifice for her family, her community and her church, having been a member of the Mt. hope Presbyterian church for 53 years, served as organist for 30 years, and was President of the Ladies Aid Society at the time of her death.

She was a lover of sacred songs and during her last hours referred to one entitled "Brighten the Corner Where You Are" which truly was her aim in life. The community has lost the radiance of her home, social and religious life, but the sunlight of her soul will gleam in that heavenly home that has been prepared for the faithful.

She leaves to mourn her passing:one daughter,Mrs. Geo. Weber, Dorchester; nine sons, as follows- Harold E; Missoula, Mont;Arthur A; and Charles G; residing in the home community;Leonard J; Dorchester; Joseph R; New Albin; Stanley C; Guttenberg;Ebon A;Floyd A; and Donald Francis, at home; and one step-son Wm.E.Beardmore, of Caledonia, Minn; also nine grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ada Martin, Dorchester; three brothers- JosephSadler, Lansing; William Sadler and Edward J. Sadler of Preston, Minn; as well as many other relatives and friends.

The funeral which was largely attended was held at the Mt. Hope church, Rev. A.C. Prust officiating, on Wednesday, April 26th, and the body laid to rest in the cemetery near by. Six nephews of the deceased acted as pallbearers.

Not lost to the ones who loved her,

Only gone before

To the beautiful Isle of Somewhere,

Where parting is no more.

Mr. and Mrs. George Weber

"There is no death!" Why should we mourn?
Why grieve ourselfs away,
When well we know, they've journeyed on into a "perfect Day"?
With us, this life, when at its best,
Is just a game of chance.
We toil and struggle, on and up,
Nor cast a backward glance.
Between us lies but one thin veil:
We almost feel their breath:
We know they'er near to comfort us,
And say: "There is no Death"
Cheer up dear ones, the time will come
When we shall reach the goal;
"Dust thou art, to dust returneth,
Was not spoken of the soul."
We live and toil, as we pass along,
We wander, side by side,
And in the span of a few short years,
We cross the "Great Divide."
But, oh, dear friends, if you'll stop to think,
I'm very sure you'll find
That "those who pass are happier far
Than those they've left behind."
"There is no death," and those we mourn,
Are not so far away,
We'll live a life of truth and love,
And be with them- some day.
(An inspiration Poem written by Bessie M. Schmidt, an old friend of Mrs.Lizzie Beardmore.)

Another, briefer obit, was posted by a volunteer transcriber. It has been added to the longer obit by the board administrator:

The largest funeral we ever attended was held at Mr. Hope Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. William Beardmore. Some 360 people were counted. Actions speak louder than words, and the large crowd and beautiful floral offerings show how much everyone thought of Mrs. Beardmore. As long as we have known her, she has always been ready to help in any way she could, and had a smile and happy greeting for us. We feel sure the pleasant memory of her will always remain with all her friends and relatives, as it will with us.
