Pioneer Mother at Rest

Another of Allamakee's pioneer mothers was called to eternal rest Monday, May 17, in the death of Mrs. Joseph Martin, Sr., at the home of her son Joe in Lansing township. She had been visiting old home friends on English Bench and returned from there last Wednesday.. A slight cold developed into bronchial pneumonia and this with the infirmities of old age caused her death after a few days illness.

Neoma Elizabeth Claridge was born at Evansville, Ind., Dec. 14, 1855, and was therefore 81 years , 5 months and 3 days old at the time of her death. On March 1, 1875, at that city she was married to Joseph R. Martin, who preceded her in death February 17, 1934. To them was born one son-- Joseph -- who is her only survivor save one grandson, Melvin Martin, of Kearney, Nebr., and one brother, Will Claridge, of Chandler, Indiana. They lived in Indiana until 1877, when they came to Allamakee county, where both resided till death. They lived on different farms in the English Bench neighborhood until about 22 years ago, when they moved to Churchtown to make their home. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Martin went to the home of her son, where she has since resided.

Thus ends the life of another true Christian mother -- a charitable, kind and loving neighbor and friend; whose long span of years was devoted to rendering unselfish service to family and friends, and whose memory will be ever cherished by a wide acquaintanceship.

Funeral services are being held today (Wednesday) at 2 o'clock p.m., at Mt. Hope church, with Rev. C. H. Hoffman officiating, and burial will be in the nearby cemetery, beside her husband and parents, who have gone before.

Casket bearers were Sam Decker, James O'Donnell, Thonas Uren, Diedrick Larson, Joseph F. Weipert and Clifford Gruber.
