Verla Melinda Schutte

Funeral services for Verla Schutte were held Saturday, March 22, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend James Allison officiated. Joann Martins was the organist, with a solo by David Gisleson. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Casket Bearers were: Melonee and David Nichols, Lynne and Chad Payne, Michael and Kara Gisleson, David and Stacie Gisleson, Fred and Kerri Schutte, and Robert "Bob" Plaht. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Verla Melinda Schutte, daughter of William F. and Emma M (Oldag) Willman, was born March 20, 1909 on a farm near Postville, IA. She passed away Wednesday evening, March 19, 2003 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Ia. She had reached the age of 93 years, eleven months and 29 days.

She was baptized on July 29, 1909 and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church on March 17, 1940. Verla received her education in the rural schools near her home and attended Postville High School.

On November 29, 1927 Verla was married to Eldo Henry Schutte in the Presbyterian Church at Postville. To this union five children were born, Marvin, Betty, Marlen, Joan and Mary Jane. The couple lived in the Castalia and Postville areas where they farmed. In 1967 Verla and Eldo retired to Postville. Verla enjoyed her home and being with her family. She spent many years babysitting in many homes in Postville. Verla was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of ELCA. Verla and Eldo became residents of the Good Samaritan on March 8, 1995.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eldo who died on September 20, 1998, a son Marvin, a daughter Mary Jane, two sisters, Bertha Dickman and Emma Meyer a brother Paul Willman and a son-in-law Earl Ruckdaschel.

Surviving are her children, Betty (Wayne) Timmerman of Decorah, IA, Marlen(Darlene) Schutte of Postville, Joan (Robmandus "Sam") Gisleson of Luana, five grandchildren, Melonee (David) Nichols of Cedar Rapids, IA, Lynne (Chad) Payne of DeGraff, MN, Michael (Kara) Gisleson of Prairie du Chien, WI, David (Stacie) Gisleson of North Liberty, IA, and Fred (Kerri) Schutte of Urbana, IA; eight great grandchildren, Kelsey, Quentin and Kaden Gisleson, Samantha and Allison Payne, Bryce, Noah and McKenzie Schutte. Also surviving are 4 step great grandchildren.
