A Service of Remembrance for Mrs. Lena Plaht was held Saturday, October 4, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville, Iowa. Family and friends shared memories, led by Menar Hahn. Inurnment was in the Postville Cemetery following the service. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Lena Louise (nee Thoma) Plaht, was born October 28, 1900, in Post Township, Allamakee County, near Postville, Iowa, to George Thoma and Louise (Nee Meyer) Thoma. She passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2003, in the Guttenberg Care Center. Lena would have been 103 years old at the end of October.
Lena was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville.
She attended the Postville Schools. Lena was employed at the Luhman and Sanders Dry Goods Store and the Farmers Store in Postville, prior to her marriage. On January 29, 1925 she was married to Walter F. Plaht at Waterloo, Iowa. A daughter, Idayne, was born to this union.The farmed in the Postville area and moved to town in 1969. Lena became a resident of the Guttenberg Care Center in December of 1990.
Lena was a farm wife most of her life and helped her husband with the farm work. She loved to sew, garden, and spend time with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter, who died in 1968, three sisters, Adala and Bertha Thoma, and Eltha Klingbeil, three brothers, Fred, Louis, and Lawrence Thoma, and a son-in-law, Clarence Bernhard.
Surviving is her daughter, Idayne Bernhard of Garnavillo, IA, four grandchildren, Tom Plaht, Colleen Joyner, Stanley Bernhard, and Steven Bernhard; five great grandchildren, Erik Plaht, Hans Malin, Daniel Joyner, Claire Bernhard, and Carly Bernhard.
