Henry Schmidt

Henry F. Schmidt, 88, died Monday, January 28, 2008, in the Odyssey Hospice, Mesa, AZ. The Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, rural Waukon, in early summer.

Henry was born April 3, 1919 in Waukon, the second child of six children born to Emma (Snitker) and Arthur Schmidt. He lived in rural Waukon and graduated from Waukon Senior High School in 1937. Henry spent his life as a farmer - steward of the land - and a caretaker of his family.

January 8, 1949, he married Joy Heikens in the First Methodist Church, Mankato, MN. They lived in rural Waukon, where Henry farmed and Joy worked in education for more than 40 years. They had one daughter, Robyn Fay.

Henry was a soloist who shared his bass voice with the entire community. He was a confirmed, life-long member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church, serving as Church Elder. For the past 20 years, he and Joy spent the winter months at their home in Apache Junction, AZ.

Henry is survived by his wife, Joy; his daughter, Robyn Fay; and his sisters, Clara (Robert) Heaton of Taylors, SC; Dorothy (Robert) Thompson of Cedar Rapids; and Jean (Keith) Hastings of Waukon. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Caroline Koth and Norma Henning.
