Mary Lou (Dasher) Wiegand, age 84, formerly of Waukon died Sunday, March 9, 2008 in Apple Valley, MN. She was cremated and memorial services was held at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Bloomington, MN Saturday, March 15, 2008. Private interment with full military honors will be scheduled for late April at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota.
Mary Lou was born June 23, 1923 to Harry and Kathryn (Curran) Dasher. She attended St. Patrick School, Waukon High School and one year at Waukon Junior College.
Mary Lou began her goal of a nursing career by entering training at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL in 1943. Accepting a commission in the U.S. Medical Corps and advancing to the rank of lieutenant, Mary Lou was stationed at several military hospitals in Texas treating combat-injured G.I.s from all theaters of war. It was there she met her husband-to-be, Lt. Arthur Wiegand, himself a disabled veteran, and they married in January of 1946 as the war ended.
Moving to Minneapolis, MN, Mary Lou, a registered nurse, began working at many area hospitals, including the Sister Kinney Institute and Fairview Hospital-Southdale. While preventing one of her patients from falling, she sustained a serious back injury that would turn out to be debilitating. Nevertheless, she persisted in her career, retiring in 2002 after nearly 60 years of professional nursing.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her mother and father. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Martindale of Waukon; her brother, Richard (Terry) Dasher; her three sons, Richard Wiegand, Lawrence (Lori) Wiegand and Robert (Shari) Wiegand; and several grandchildren.
