MRS. THOMAS EDWARD (Clara Catherine Waters) VICKERY

Clara Catherine Vickery was born to parents Samuel (Jr.) and Jennie (Hughes) Waters on August 6, 1902 at Esterville, Iowa. She died Saturday, July 11, 1992 at the Postville Good Samaritan Center. She was 89.

She was baptized by the Rev. Hursh in the United Brethren Church when she was 12 years old. She graduated from Postville High School in 1921, and attended the Normal Training School for teachers at Cedar Falls, Iowa.

On Jan. 7, 1924 she married Thomas Edward Vickery in Waukon, the Rev. Van Nice officiating. They lived on a farm near Waukon for the first several years of their marriage. They also lived near Frankville, and in 1926 they moved to Harpers Ferry. They moved to their farm in Post Township, northeast of Postville, in 1952. They moved to Postville in 1964. Clara has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center for several years.

She is preceded in death by three children in infancy; a son, Ernest, who died at the age of 13; and her husband, Tom, who died July 15, 1965.

Surviving are three sons, Keith and his wife Nancy of Dubuque, Wayne and his wife Cecilia of Waterloo and Leslie and his wife Rosa of Giessen, Germany; five grandchildren, Linda Mashek, Wayne Vickery II, Wynn Wagner, Sandra Louviere and Kathy Vickery; and six great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Tom Mashek, Lyndsay and Megan Wagner, and Hunter and Chase Vickery.

Clara was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and the CPC Women. She also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Post Franklin Study Club, the Postville Historical Society and the Community Hospital Auxiliary. She will be remembered for her commitment to serving as an active member of clubs, and for her love of reading.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 16, 1992 at 1:30 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian church in Postville, the Rev. Terrance P. Hennesy officiating. Beverly Bacon was the organist. The Schutte Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Rossville Cemetery. The VFW Auxiliary held a memorial service on Wednesday, July 15 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
