Verna Lucille Jenkins was born February 3, 1912 in Normal, IL, the daughter of Alfred Martin and Alma Mathilda (Leikvold) Monserud. Her family returned to Allamakee County when she a young girl and farmed east of Waukon. Verna was baptized and confirmed at East Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church in rural Waterville. She graduated from Waterville High School, where she played on the basketball team and took the normal training curriculum, and went on to get her degree in education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She returned to Allamakee County, where she taught at several rural schools.
June 2, 1936 she married Herbert Milton Jenkins, who she had met at college, at her parents' home. They lived for a short time in Tingley and Harpers Ferry before settling on a farm in Ludlow Township near Waukon. Verna soon took on the role of a very busy homemaker and mother, tending to everything around the house and raising her five boys. They continued to live on the farm until moving to Waukon in the mid-1960s.
Verna's church was very important to her and she was involved in many activities at St. Paul's United Methodist. She was a member of several neighborhood clubs while living on the farm, and was also a member of Thursday Club and Eastern Star. She made education a priority for her family and kept herself current and sharp by being an avid reader and working the crossword puzzle every day. She raised a garden for many years, was an excellent baker, and enjoyed following sporting events, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and local school sports. Verna was very supportive of her family and encouraged them in all their activities and interests.
