The death of Gilman Nelson one of the well known and highly respected residents of this vicinity, occurred Sunday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Herman, residing southeast of Waukon, where he had been tenderly cared for during his declining years.
Mr. Nelson was born in Bergen, Norway on April 15, 1840 and came to this country when 19 years of age. Since then, Allamakee County had been his home the greater part of the time. He was united in marriage with Miss Albertina Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elling Anderson, pioneer residents of Makee Township, who passed away eleven years ago.
They became parents of eight children, namely; Mrs. Charles Herman, Mrs. J.S. Kaeser, and Mrs. Dan Kaeser, all of this vicinity; Mrs. Hans Hanson of Cedar Falls; Mrs. Adolph Nelson and Edwin C. Nelson of Janesville, Wis.; Ole G. Nelson of Benson, Minn.; and Albert Nelson of Cumberland, Wis.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at St. John's Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. P.F. Kjorlaug. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

I have since figured out the obit has a couple of errors.
1. Mr.Nelson was born on the farm Eikeland in Hamre, Hordaland, Norway on 20 April 1842. This is based on the date in his Death Certificate and the date found in the Hamre churchbook which match.
2. He emigrated from Norway in 1864 when he was 22 years old. This is based on his presence in 1864 at a baptism ceremony at the Hamre parish and his absence from Eikeland in the 1865 Census of Norway.
