AREA YOUTH DIES IN SWIMMING ACCIDENT ON TURKEY RIVER
A rural Postville youth who would have been a freshman at Valley Schools this fall, died Friday afternoon after authorities said he attempted to swim across the Turkey River.
Collin Harbaugh, 14, and more than a dozen other Valley FFA students were participating in a canoe outing on the Turkey River, June 15. The group had stopped to swim in the area of an old railroad bridge between Clermont and Elgin, just before 1 p.m.
The Fayette County Sheriff's Office was summoned at 12:55 p.m. Emergency services were also dispatched to the scene.
Authorities determined Harbaugh had attempted to swim across the river when he disappeared under the water. He was located about 10 minutes later, but was unresponsive. Elgin Area Ambulance personnel and the Clermont Fire Department began CPR. Paramedics from Northeast Iowa Ambulance Service were picked up en route and continued emergency rescue operations but efforts to revive the teenager failed.
The Fayette County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Services for Collin Harbaugh, son of Brian and Koral Harbaugh, are today (Wednesday), June 20, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville at 12:30 p.m. Pastor Steve Brackett will officiate. Burial will be in the Postville Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday at Valley Schools.
