Barbara Ann Beise was born January 17, 1924 in Long Prairie, MN, the daughter of Theo R. and Adah (Haney) Spellum. She was baptized in St. Cloud, MN and confirmed in the Christian faith in Glencoe, MN. She grew up in the Glencoe area and graduated from high school there. She married Clyde W. Beise.

As a young woman, Barb assisted her mother in her nursing home operation in Lester Prairie, MN. She did this for 16 years. At the age of 48, she attended the University of Minnesota for Chemical Dependency counseling and interned in Willmar, MN. She served as Chemical Dependency Counselor for Chippewa County, MN, retiring in 1992.

Barb was very proud of the fact that she attained 43 years of sobriety and was an avid AA supporter and member. She helped many individuals cope with their addiction and attending AA meetings was a big part of her life. She was an independent woman and throughout her active years she enjoyed vacationing in Mexico and traveling around the world. Some countries she visited were Greece, Ireland, Scotland, France and England. She enjoyed visiting with her friends and loved the company of her constant companion, 'Blue', her cat.

She is survived by her daughter, Joan Patricia (Toney) Curtis of Gilbert, MN; her son Bill (Laurie) Beise of Minneapolis, MN; three grandchildren, Olivia, Isaiah and Elsa; nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Carol Lee; her husband; two sisters, Betty and Harriet; and three brothers, Maurice, Karl and Jim.

The Allamakee Co. connection isn't apparent in this obituary, but because it appeared in the Waukon paper, there most certainly is a connection.....

I went to cemetery and found she is buried in the John Haney plot at Oak Hill cemetery, along with the Spellums & Proctors.

Adah Hazel Haney was born 1885, and died 1969. She married Theodore R. Spellum, son of John Spellum and Anna. He was born 1882, and died 1948. Both Adah & Theodore are buried in Oak Hill.

Barbara was not only buried in Allamakee County in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Lansing, but her parents and other relatives were too. I am the son of her sister, Harriet.

Barbara was the daughter of Ada(h) Hazel (Lytle) Spellum. Adah's mother was Alice Elizabeth Haney. You will find those last names in a line of headstones in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

John Haney, who was regarded as the Father of Lansing is in the line of relatives too.

Adah was raised along the Mississippi and she had many relatives in that area including two spinsters who lived in Lansing. One or both worked in the library. They had a home near the river, which became abandoned after their deaths and is now replaced by a newer home.

To my knowledge Barbara never lived in Allamakee County. By the time her sister, Harriet, was 18 years old the family had lived in 27 different places. They finally settled in Lester Prairie, where the family bought an old hotel and a large home, which they converted into two nursing homes, Alice Haney Nursing Home and "the annex." This is where Barbara worked for a while. However, after marrying Clyde Beise she did not work outside the home, for the most part. Her husband's parents owned Beise Implement, which sold International Harvester implements. Clyde worked for his parent's dealership.
