A Pioneer Mother Passes On Friday
Mrs. W. Lawson Had Lived In Franklin Since 1883
A pioneer Franklin township mother, Mrs. William Lawson, passed away last Friday following a brief illness. She was 74 years old and had been a resident on the same farm since 1883. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Community Presbyterian church at two o'clock, with the Rev. L. E. Crippen, pastor of the United Brethren church officiating. Interment was made in Postville cemetery. Mrs Lawson was born as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Roffman, July 25, 1863, in Berlin, Germany, and came to the United States at the age of nine years.
She was married to William Lawson April 9,1883, and together the young couple set up housekeeping on the farm in Frankling township which has been their home continuously since then.
Nine children were born to these people, all of whom, excepting one son, Elmer, together with the husband survive. These are, Mrs. Fred Segrist, Fred, Sherman, Frank and Leonard, all of this community; John Lawson of Harshaw, Wisconsin; Mrs. Mike Webber of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Louis Peterson of Waukon. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren, seven great-granchildren, four sisters and two brothers, all of whom have the deepest sympathy of their many friends.
As a wife and mother, Mrs. Lawson was ever kind and dutiful; alert to the welfare and well being of those about her, not in a spirit of authority, but rather of love and a readiness to give timely counsel and advice.
She was a member of the United Brethren church.
Bertha Roffman Lawson died 21 Jan 1938.
