Mrs. J. W. Harris Passes On Suddenly Thursday
Mrs. J. W. Harris, lifelong resident of Post township, passed away at the family home last Thursday, the end coming in her sleep. She had been uptown the day before attending to her shopping and in apparent good health. She was 67 years of age.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Community Presbyterian church in this city, with the Rev. Fred Butler, pastor of the Frankville Community church officiating. Interment was made in Postville cemetery.
Mrs Harris was born as Caroline Segrist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Segrist, September 27, 1870, in Post township, on the place now occupied by the C. C. Meyer family.
She was united in marriage to James William Harris, February 17, 1887, and together they reared their family in the farm home in Post towsnhip. Last year they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Harris is survived by her husband, three sons, Martin of Castalia, Obert and Fred of Postville. Also surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Joe Evans, Postville; Mrs. Ethel Fast, Zanesville, Ohio; Mrs. Fred Lawson, Postville; Mrs. Lester Smith, Postville; Mrs. Edward Barnes, Clermont; and Mrs. Ernest Johnson, Canton, Minnesota. Also two sisters, Mrs. Conrad Hangartner and Mrs. Frank Roffman; and a brother Fred Segrist. She also leaves 38 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Harris was formerly a member of the Bethel United Brethren church, but later transferred to the Postville Community Presbyterian church. She was known as a friend to everyone in need. Hers was the dominant spirit of the pioneer, with a greatness of soul, that met life squarely, flinching not, nor retreating. She was an outstanding person in her home community. She often quoted from the scripture, "she hath done what she could" as a simple answer to the thanks of someone grateful for her timely help. She has been a staunch wife and mother and her passing leaves a deep loss in the family circle and to all those who knew her.
Caroline Segrist Harris died 13 Jan 1938.
