Retired Lansing Man Passes Away Monday

D. A. Holmes fifty years on Lansing's Main Street

DeVillo Ambrose Holmes passed away at his home in Lansing about 9:30 Monday morning following a day or less illness after reaching the age of 86 years, 1 month and 9 days. He has had a heart condition the past couple of months but was able to attend the 7:30 Mass on Sunday.

He was born June 9, 1869 on the old Holmes farm between Village Creek and lansing, a son of Oliver Wendel Holmes and Catherine Trainor. Following his education he assisted on the home farm and on November 12, 1895 at Lycurgus he was married to Mary Regan by the late Father Norton. They farmed a short time before he came to town where he learned the harness making trade under the late F.W. Wagner whom he later bought out together with a harness shop operated by Mr. Widmeier. For more than fifty years he was in business on Lansing's Main St. in the same building most of the time in the harness shop and later in a shoe store and general merchandise store which he discontined more than a dozen years ago. In the early days, before the advent of mechanized farming, his store and shop was one of the busiest places in town and this continued for many years. An expert craftsman he made countless customers and friends through accommodating ways and conscientious workmanship. "D.A." as he was commonly called by young and old alike, was known all over Allamakee county and numerous acquaintances will be sorry to read of his death.

Mrs. Holmes passed away only last January 21st and while a shock to him he seemed to recover and slowly became his old self again until a heart spell late this spring caused him to gradually fail in health.. Until then he appeared in all ways and manners as a man twenty years younger. He is survived by three sons, Cornelius, of St. Paul; Daniel, of Sioux Falls and Joe at home, one daughter, Mary, Mrs. Raymond Gantenbein, of La Crosse; one sister, Mrs. Nina Boyer, of Rapid City, S.D. and nine grandchildren of whom he was especially fond. Besides his parents three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at nine o'clock from Innaculate Conception Church where he was almost acknowledged as a "pillar" for his long and untiring efforts in its religious activities. He served on the board of trustees and in the choir for many years. He was member of the K.C.'s, the Foresters and the Holy Name Society and in earlier years actively engaged in civic affairs.

Msgr. Henry Scharphoff will offer the Solemn Requiem High Mass. Casket bearers will be nephews Edward Julson, Chicago; Dan Regan, Sturgis, S.D.; Peter Whalen, New Albin; William Clark, Charles Regan and Charles Whalen, of Waukon.
