Death of Gustave Dee

The death of the above pioneer resident took place Saturday morning at Finley hospital, Dubuque, where he had been a patient for some months, following a long period of illness. He had been taken to that city to be cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Wallace Cooper, but finally had to be taken to hospital, where death finally took place as above stated.

Deceased was born in Province Brandenburg, Germany, and came to the United States in 1877. He settled on a farm near Lansing, IA, and lived
there until 1910, when he retired and moved to Lansing. In 1937 he came to Dubuque to live with his daughter, Mrs. W.D. Cooper, 1335 Glen Oak Street.

His survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Herman (Ida) Werth of LeMars, Ia., Mrs. A. T. (Evelyn) Wendel of Church, Ia., and Mrs. W.D.(Malinda)Cooper of Dubuque; one son, Edward Dee of Lansing, Ia., one sister, Mrs. August Kuehn of Waukon, Ia; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His wife, Augusta Feuerhelm, whom he married in 1879 preceded him in death on June 8, 1929. A son, Herbert, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Dee was an member of the German Presbyterian church in Lansing, and the new pastor, Rev. Henry Marks, officiated at his funeral Monday afternoon, The remains being brought here Monday morning by auto hearse. Owing to needing more room than the church afforded, services were held in Calvary Evangelical church across the street, with the pastor there, Rev. Geo. Cramer assisting. Musical numbers during the service were furnished by Misses Ada Bauman, Elsie Moellermann and George Aschom, with Mrs. Edna Aschom as accompanist.

Casket bearers were Cletus and Delbert Dee, grandsons, and Clarence and Ben Fererhelm, Leonard Dee and Otto Wurm, nephews; and interment was made beside his wife in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery.

Mr. Dee was an honest, upright Christian man in every sense of the word-- an industrious, sturdy pioneer whose thrift and good management of his farm gave him a competence for his later years in life. But few of his type of men remain, and his passing causes sorrow, not only to children and relatives, but to a host of old time friends, who admired him for his outstanding traits of sincerity, honesty and rugged individualism.

Lansing, Ia. - Funeral services for Gustav Dee, 85, were held at the Evangelical church Monday afternoon, with the Revs. Henry Marks and George Cramer officiating. Mr. Dee died at a hospital in Dubuque Saturday, where he had received hospital care for the past five months.

Mr. Dee was born at Delsig province, Germany, March 26, one of a family of eight children. His education was received in the schools of that country, and when he was a young man he spent three years in the standing army of Germany. His military training remained with him during his lifetime.

He asked for a year's leave of absence and came to America, where he remained, applying for his naturalization papers as soon as he had qualified.

Mr. Dee worked near Waukon until his marriage to Mrs. Augusta Feuerhelm - Kehrberg Aug. 12, 1879.

They were the parents of five children, and resided on the farm in French Creek until 1910, when they retired and came to Lansing to live. Mrs. Dee died June 8, 1929. A son, Herbert, and stepdaughter also preceded him in death.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ida Werth, LeMars; Mrs. Melinda Cooper, Dubuque; and Mrs. Evelyn Wendel, Church; a son, Edward of Lansing; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Julia Keuhn, Waukon.

Funeral services were held at the funeral home in Dubuque Sunday afternoon, with the Rev. William Laube, D.D., officiating, and attended by many former Lansing residents. During the services the Misses Ada Bauman and Elsie Moellerman and George Aschom sang two songs, and Miss Minerva Dersch, Dubuque, sang solos in the church as well at the graveside. Pallbearers were Cletus, Delbert and Leonard Dee, Ben Feuerhelm, Otto Worm and Clarence Feuerhelm. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.
