Adams County Free PressHenry Westrope, a former Corning resident and pioneer hardware merchant, in Corning, was calling on old friends in the community last week. Henry was 90 years old August 12 but "holds his age" remarkably well. He is
now living with his son and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Westrope at Batavia, III. Wayne operates a drug store in near-by Geneva, III. Another son,
Allen and a daughter. Helen, live in Des Moines. Henry is the last surviving member of his immediate family. His brother, George, died at Belden, Nebr., last May. Henry called at the Free Press office and we had an enjoyable visit with the former Corning gentleman, recalling some of the early day history of Corning and Adams County. While in the community Henry visited in the Geo. Evans home in Lincoln township and the Frank Murdock home in Corning.

Adams County Free PressHenry Elwood Westrope was born Aug. 12, 1858 near Belmont, Wisconsin and died April 26. 1952 in the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 93 years.
In early manhood he attended business Schools in Dubuque, Iowa and in Platteville, Wisconsin. In 1883 he came to Corning, Iowa where he engaged in various occupations.
In 1885 he returned to Belmont for his marriage to Laura E. Beaumont on Sept. 15th. They returned to Corning to make their new home. In October 1925 she preceded him in death. He was a member of the Congregational Church. Odd Fellows and Masonic lodges. He was active in town, county, church and school affairs. He served in town and county as treasurer and also as Post Master.
In 1923 he went to Belden, Nebraska to assist a brother in the mercantile business. His marriage to Forrest Garwood of Belden took place in Sept. 1932. Their home was in Belden until 1945, the time of her death. At that lime, he went to make his home with his younger son Wayne, and his wife Sefer. in Batavia, ILL. In October 1951 he came to Des Moines to be near his daughter Helen and son Alan. During this time and up to the time of his death, he lived in the Bishop Drumm home for the Aged. His daughter Helen of Des Moines, Alan of Des Moines, Wayne of Batavin, daughters-in-law Sefer, and Mildred, brother Sherman Westrope of Tulsa. Okla.. stepson
John Garwood of Hayes, Kansas, grandson Tom and great granddaughter Susan survive him.
The funeral was held at the Lincs {?} Funeral home on Monday afternoon, April 28, at 2:00, with Rev. Frank Jacobs conducting the service.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Lee Watts, accompanied by Donna Watts. Paul bearers were Francis Turner, Carl Gillet, Frank Murdock,
Tom Westrope, Fay Gillet and Fred Hill. Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
