The entire community was shocked and saddened Monday night, July 15th, 1946 when the report came of the death of Mrs. Caleb Erskins. She and her husband had attended the show and were preparing to retire, when Mrs. Erskine fell on the floor, death coming that suddenly from a heart attack. She had not been ill, and her passing was a terrible shock to her family and friends.
Mrs. Erskine was well known for her cherry nature and her charitable and friendly ways. She was a devoted wife and mother, her entire life and time given to her family. The friends and neighbors join the family in their sorrow, and will miss her kindly presence.
Clara Marie Geary, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Geary was born in Quincy, Adams County, Iowa, February 17, 1902 . She was united in marriage to Caleb S. Erskins on June 25th, 1933 in the Corning Methodist parsonage. Four sons blessed this union, two of whom, with the father, survive to mourn her loss, Ronald Keith, of Waterloo, Iowa, who served in the Navy during the late war, and Dale S. who resides at home. The two sons, George G. and Caleb S. preceded her in death.
Besides her husband and sons, Mrs. Erskine is survived by two sisters, Gladys Davis and family of Corning and Mrs. Blanche Roselton and family of Kent, Iowa; one brother, Jessey Geary and family of Kent and a number of other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Harry Rogers, in the Corning Baptist Church, Thursday afternoon, July 18th at 3 o’clock. Music was furnished by john Riegel and Mrs. Russell Rolland, with Miss Eva Roland accompanying.
Pall Bearers were Carl Gillet, Carl Riegel, Robert Dicks, Ralph Lyman, James Hatton, and Lawrence Kohl. Interment was in Prairie Rose Cemetery.
