Merrill Lloyd “Tony” Hayes passed away early Wednesday morning, May 8, 1985 in Atlantic. The son of George and Lula Mae Fees Hayes, he was born January 20, 1906 in Carl. He attended the Corning High School. After farming with his family north of Corning, he moved to Lewis to enter the oil business. In 1936 he moved to Atlantic where he operated Hayes Sales & Service.
He was married to Cathryn Shuler of Corning, who died in 1942. He later married Wilma Janss of Atlantic.
Surviving are his wife, Wilma; four sons, Clifford Shuler Hayes and wife Meredith of Omaha, Nebraska, Claude William Hayes and wife Harriet of Corning, Robert Duane Hayes and wife Sandrea of Muscatine, and Thomas Merrill Hayes and wife Kathleen of Atlantic. 11 grandchildren, David Hayes and wife Alice of Albuquerque, N. M., Rebecca Hayes of Lincoln, Nebraska, Timothy Hayes of Deborah, Deidi and Daniel Hayes of Corning, Christopher and Heather Hayes of Muscatine, Jody, Stacy, Jon, and Ashley of Atlantic, four brothers, Howard Hayes of Red Oak, Byron Hayes of Chillicothe, Missouri, Robert Hayes of Des Moines and Phil Hayes of Sioux City; two sisters, Mrs. C. D. (Melba) Wood of Creston and Reva Marsh of Villisca and a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Cathryn, a son Harlan Howard Hayes; his parents; a sister, Mae Cooney, and a brother Forest “Tom” Hayes.
Funeral services were held at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, May 10 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Keith Ringers of the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Corning officiating. Interment was in the Prairie Rose Cemetery south of Corning.
