Joseph Cecil Rubin, 83, was born July 5, 1911 in Adams County, near Brooks to Fred Godfrey and Carrie Gravett Rubin. He died July 30, 1994 at Marcy Hospital in Corning.
He attended country school, Jasper No. 6, and began farming immediately. On April 21, 1935, he was married to Leta Selders in the Iveyville Methodist Church where they were members. When the Iveyville Church closed they became members of the Fairview United Church of Christ.
Mr. Rubin was a member of the Farm Bureau and had served several years on the local Corning School Board. He was an avid reader, but faming was his life. He loved all phases of it. He fought chinch bug infestations and weather. He was privileged to see mud roads and gas lanterns become good gravel roads and rural electricity. In 1978 for health reasons he rented his farm and moved into Corning. He enjoyed walking, workings in his yard, and joining friends in town for coffee as long as he was able.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Loy; three brothers, Clarence, Fred, and Lonnie.
He is survived by his wife Leta; Ronald (wife Hazel) Rubin, Des Moines; daughter Joleen (husband Robert) Nelson, Corning; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother Emmet Rubin of Bedford; six sisters, Minnie Huntington, Bedford, Pauline Lundquist La Belle, Florida, Evelyn (husband Roy) Kapple, Council Bluffs, Edith (husband Paul) Bell, Verda Lyons, Loveland, Colorado.
Services were held August 2 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Corning with Rev. Neil Schroeder and Rev. Howard Wells officiating.
Casket bearers were Kurt Nelson, Joel Nelson, Randall Rubin, Kirk Rier, Mark Fuller, Steve Jurshak.
Burial was in Methodist Grove Cemetery at Brooks.
Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospital and/or Fairview United Christian Church of Christ.
Coen-Beaty Funeral Home of Corning was in charge of arrangements.
