James Isaac “Jim” Roberts of Corning, passed away at the Rosary Hospital at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 1977. He was a lifelong resident of Adams County. He had farmed in the Carbon and Prescott areas until his retirement last year.
His widow, Etha, lives at 809 9th Street, Corning.
He was an ardent outdoorsman and conservationist.
Jim was born on a farm west of Carbon in Adams County on March 28, 1896. He was the youngest of five children of William H. and Ella Haney Roberts.
He volunteered and served with the 11th Ordnance Guards during World War II. He was married to Luella Bloom of Nodaway December 1, 1920, she preceded him in death in September of 1964. To this union one son and one daughter were born.
On May 15 1966 he was united in marriage to Etha P. Shearburn of Mt. Etna, Iowa.
He is survived by his widow, Eta, his daughter, Adeline Elder of Bellevue, Nebraska and one son James P. Roberts of rural Prescott. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Anne Figgins of rural Cabon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, John and Frank, and a sister, Fanny Day, al of Adams County.
He had been a longtime member of Ourcq Post #117 of the American Legion in Corning and the National Rifleman’s Association. He will be mourned by his family, many nephews, nieces, and countless friends. His sense of humor endeared him to children of all ages.
Funeral services were held at the Larkin Roland Funeral Home in Corning, September 10 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Alfred Hunter, a life long friend conducting the service. Burial was at the Quincy Cemetery with full military honors by Ourcq Post #117, American Legion.
Organ music was provided by Doris Swartz. Casket bearers were Ronald Figgins, Larry Carden, John Day, Glenn Figgins, Bill Hollis and Jim Scanlan.
