Lawrence Ray Haggerty was born June 6, 1919, in Adams County, Iowa in the
family home where he lived his entire life. He was the son of Jesse O. Haggerty and
Luella Gertrude (Alexander) Haggerty. Lawrence was married three times. He and
his first wife, Geraldine Sheridan, had a son, Larry Haggerly. His second son, Don
Haggerty, came during his second marriage to Loretta Shaul. Three stepdaughters,
Evelyn, Betty and Joyce, were added to his family upon his marriage to Mildred
(Sparks) Kirkpatrick.
One continuity in Lawrence's life was the family farm. He had a great love of
the land and reaping the rewards of his efforts. Neighbors would gather each
season to bring in the harvest together. He loved farming a great deal and worked
extremely hard his entire life, virtually up until the end. Hand in hand with his love of
farming was his love of the equipment he used, which he tended to carefully and kept in
excellent running order. He carried the farming camaraderie over to his social
life, spending many Saturday nights in town standing on the street corner visiting with
friends . . . sometimes a little too much. In later years, he continued to go to town to
drink coffee and visit with friends. Earlier in his life, he and wife Mildred thoroughly
enjoyed traveling and made a trip west every year. His greatest love, however, was his
family . . . his children and many grandchildren.
Left to cherish Lawrence's memory are his two sons, Larry Haggerty and wife
Darlene of Corning; and Don Haggerty and wife Janell of Loveland, Colorado; two step
daughters, Joyce Stewart of Creston; and Evelyn Schrodt and husband Harold of Murray;
ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and greatgreat-grandchild; a nephew,
Harrison Means; and a niece, Sue Means and husband Dennis.
Preceding Lawrence in death were his parents; an older sister, Opal Cook; a twin sister,
Elizabeth Means; a stepdaughter, Betty Westlake; and a nephew, Ronald Means.
