Ryan, Elda Mae Lawrence -
Elda Mae Ryan, a longtime active member of the Lenox area community, passed away Nov. 1, 2002, at her home in Lenox. She was 87 years old.
Mass of a Christian Burial for Elda was held Nov. 5 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox with Rev. Dan Siepker officiating.
Casket bearers were Matthew Ryan, Michael Ryan, Molly Ryan, Thomas Ryan, Shaun Ryan and Jenny Ryan. Honorary bearers were Bill Beaman, Dick Brammer, Patrick Bradley, Jim Rychnovsky, Tom Lynam, Tom Shields, Tom Bradley and Frank Schweers.
Music was provided by Bonnie Halligan, Florence Robinson and Randy Trost. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Corning.
Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Catholic Charities.
Elda was born on August 17, 1915, in Carbon to Arthur Frank and Bertha Caroline (Peterson) Lawrence. She graduated from Corning High School in 1933. On Jan. 22, 1940, she was married to Leo Vincent Ryan during a ceremony in Corning.
She was a school teacher for six years at Mercer No. 4 in Adams County, and she farmed with her husband at their farm south of Lenox.
Elda was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox and served as president of the Altar and Rosary Society and the DCCW. She was a 25-year member of the American Cancer Society. Other memberships included the American Legion
Auxiliary and Rose Anns Auxiliary (lifetime member).
She and Leo sponsored the Children in Need Help-A-Child program for 33 years. She served for five years, 1958-1963, as a 4-H leader. Elda and Leo were selected as Honored Citizens in their community and as King and Queen of the Lenox Rodeo.
Elda was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leo in 1988; sons Dennis Ryan in 1941 and Joe Ryan in 2000; brothers Russell and Frank Lawrence; and sisters Velma Rief and Anna Wilburn.
Survivors include three sons, Dan (wife Jean) Ryan of Red Wing, Minn., Mike Ryan of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Bob (wife Susan) Ryan of rural Bedford; two daughters, Theresa (husband Guy) Hocking of Seabrook, Texas, and Mary (husband Jeff) Turley of Omaha; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
