Hazel L. Wetzel, the daughter of Robert Bruce and Saral Ellen Monahan West, was born in Taylor county, Iowa on February 1, 1892 and passed away at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, May 2, 1979 at the age of 87 years, 3 months, and 1 day. She had been in ill health for the last few months and had resided at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Corning since October 1978.
She was united in marriage with Verne C. Wetzel, March 4, 1914 in Taylor County. Two sons, Cleo Harlan and Roy LaVerne was born to bless this union. The couple lived all of their lives in Adams and Taylor Counties. She was a member of the Fairview Church South of Corning.
Mr. Wetzel preceded her in death December 18, 1973. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and four sixtes. She was the last member of her family.
Survivors include her two sons and their wives, Cleo Harlan and wife Dorothy of Gravity, Iowa and Roy LaVerne and wife Pearl of Belton, Texas, six grandchildren, Ronald and wife Janet of Corning, Robert and wife Loretta of Corning, Dwight and wife Glenda of Bedford, Marcia and husband Galen of Gravity, Lumen and wife Freda of Troy, Texas, Phyllis and husband Dusty of Princeton, Indiana; three step-grandchildren, Mertie, Brenda, and Dianne and her husband Billy, all of Belton, Texas. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren, and two sisters-in-law, Flossie West of Corning and Margery Rassell of Minnesota, and many nephews and nieces who were very dear to her.
Funeral services were held at the Larkin-Roland Funeral Home in Corning, May 4, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Mel Smith of Gravity officiating. Interment was in Prairie Rose Cemetery, Corning.
Music was provided by Erma Fuller, organist and Doris Swart, vocalist. Pall bearers were Lloyd Leonard, Arnold Leonard, Harold Leonard, Clark Peterson, John Keef, and Claud Paul.
