Alice Margaret Olive, daughter of Ralph and Harriet Wilson Preston was born January 6, 1901 in Adams County, Iowa and passed away December 15, 1988 at the Mercy Hospital, in Corning, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 11 months, and 9 days.
She attended grade school in Adams County, graduated from Corning High School in 1918 and attended the Corning Academy. She taught in rural schools through the Spring of 1921.
On March 9, 1921, Alice was united in marriage with Elmer Ward Olive at the home of her parents north of Corning. Five children were born to bless this union. They began farming in Taylor County, Iowa, moved to the original Icarian Colony Farm in 1927, moved again to a farm near Brooks, and later into Brooks, Iowa. They moved into Corning just before Elmer's death in 1978. Alice has lived at Colonial Manor the past five years.
Her interest were many. She was a devoted wife and mother a beautiful seamstress. She was never idle, keeping her hands busy even when sitting to visit. She was organist at the mt. Pleasant Church, and always active in Church work, both at Brooks and Corning. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, a Sunday School teacher for 25 years, a 4-H leader, a member of the Search Light Club in Brooks, the Departmental Club, Farm Bureau, and a member of the Jolly Homemakers Neighborhood Club for 44 years. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed long walks in the timber.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, one son, Donald Olive, two brothers, Wayne and Lowell and one sister, Aneita Lawrence.
Alice is survived by four children, Louise Wheatley (Mrs. Charles) of Rockwell City, Iowa, Eleanor Cantieri (Mrs. Richard) of Corning, Kenneth Olive and his wife Barbara of St. Charles, Missouri, and Marjie Hoversten (Mrs. Glen) of Afton, two sisters, Esther McGregor of Corning, and Ruth Lindhammer of North Carolina, one brother, Allen Preston of New Bern, North Carolina, a daughter-in-law, Nadine Olive of Corning; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 17, 1988, 1:30 p.m. at the Corning United Methodist Church. The Rev. Don Strickler officiated. Casket bearers were Mile Olive, Andy Gentle, Mark Cantieri, David Wheatley, Donald Wheatley, and Dennis Eigenheer. Honorary bearers were Paul Cantieri, Dennis Olive, and Tom Olive. Music was by Kathy Schafer, organs and vocalist. Selections included "Beyond the Sunset" and "Rock of Ages." The congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art." Interment was in the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Iowa.
