Hugh Ross
Hugh Ross was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, August 1, in the year of 1833, and departed this life July 19, 1912, his age being 78 years, 11 months and 17 days. He was the youngest of a family of three boys and three girls and the last surviving member of the family. His father died in Scotland and the rest of the family in Canada, excepting one brother who died in North Dakota. Of his father's family Hugh Ross was the first to emigrate to Canada, locating in that country in the year of 1846. On February 23, 1860, he was united in marriage to Eliza Jane Elliott in Kincardine, Canada, and a short time, after moved to Noran, Illinois, and in the year of 1869 moved to Iowa, in which state he has ever since resided. The married life of Hugh Ross and Eliza Jane Ross extended to nearly fifty years and this union was broken but a few days ago when the beloved wife departed this life, preceding her husband to that better world but one week and three days. There are four children who mourn the departure of their father and mother. They are Miss Edith C. Ross, Mrs. C. F. Jackson, George and Madison Ross. Two sons have died, James and Herbert. There are nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The church relation of Hugh Ross was the same as that of his beloved wife and companion. He first united with the Corning Baptist church February 8, 1874, coming by letter from the Fairview Baptist church of Taylor county, Iowa. April 3, 1880, he was granted a Letter and assisted in the organization of a Mission Baptist church in the vicinity in which.he resided. When this church disbanded he was again received into the Corning Baptist church and remained a member of the church until his death. It can truly be said that a loving husband, a devoted father, a good friend and neighbor and a Christian has gone to his reward. The funeral services were, held in the Nodaway Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. F. L. Roper, pastor of the Corning Baptist church, assisted by Rev. Mr. Post. Interment was made in the Prairie Rose cemetery.
