Benjamin Walter died at his home one mile southwest of Brooks, Iowa, Thursday evening, December 30,1915, at 10 o'clock of infirmities of old age and complications. The funeral was held Sunday at 1 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church southwest of Brooks and was conducted by Rev. Raymond J. Rutt, pastor of the Corning Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the Methodist Grove Cemetery.
Deceased was born September 21st, 1833, in Canton, Berne, Switzerland, and was aged 82 years, 3 months and 9 days. From a family of five sisters and four brothers, he was the last to go, his twin brother, John Walter, dying in 1902.
He came to America in 1854, and the family located in Monroe County, Ohio, where he was married to Miss Mary Hedinger, February 13, 1864, who survives him. To them ten children were born, three preceeding their father in death. The surviving children are Mrs. W.F Hossman of Brooks, Ed Walter of Nodaway, Fred Walter of Clarinda, Mrs. E.L. Stillinger of Brooks, Henry, Frank and Will residing at home. They came to Adams County in 1884, where they have since made their home. Mr. Walter was a very highly respected gentleman and no finer man resided in the county. His word was considered as good as a note and all his dealings with friends or neighbors were such as would bear the light of day. When a child he was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of which he continued a member untl his death. Besides his wife and children he leaves sixteen grandchildren and many friends. His children were all in attendance at his funeral.
