John H. McPherren died suddenly March 11, 1931 at the home of his son, Ralph McPherren, north of Gravity where he has made his home since his wife's death. He was the son of James and Sarah McPherren and was born in Mercer County, Illinois near Sunbeam, October 9, 1854. When a child he came with his parents to Adams County and located on a farm north of Corning. Later Mr. McPherren returned to Illinois, where he married Margaret A. Shearer, May 13, 1873. That fall they came to Iowa, where they have since made their home.
The following children survive the deceased, Guy, George, Ralph, Luther, Donald, Mrs. Maude Brown, Mrs. Lottie Cox, and Mrs. Lena Firkins, all residing near here. Mrs. Jessie Walter of Maywood, California, and Mrs. Auro McPherren of Los Angeles, California. Besides these he is survived by twenty-one grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Lyons of Corning, Mrs. Fannie Lincoln, of Wyoming, and Mrs. Cens Hicks of Cromwell.
Mr. McPherren was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He will be remembered as a loving father and good neighbor, and one who enjoyed keenly the flowers which he spent much time cultivating. Mrs. McPherren died September 9, 1930 and two brothers and six half brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at Oak Hill Church at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 15, conducted by Rev. A. J. Mathews assisted by Rev. Warrior. Interment was made in Prairie Rose Cemetery.
