Jessie May Leatherman, daughter of Daniel and Ellen Bixler Leatherman was born May 25, 1882 on a farm northwest of Brooks, Iowa and died November 20, 1962 at the Rosary Hospital at Corning, Iowa at the age of 80 years, 5 months, and 25 days.
She was the only daughter. Her father and mother passed away in 1915 with three weeks of other. Two infants brothers preceded her in death., one in 1887 and one in 1893.
Her schooling began in a country school known as Dog Hollow, near her country home. Her family moved to Brooks when Jessie was around eight years old and later returned to the farm. About 50 years ago, Jessie moved with her parents to Brooks, where her parents died and she had lived since except when the time she spent in Cedar Rapids helping care for a cousin, Mrs. Mary Price, whom she dearly loved.
Jessie taught school for many years in Taylor and Adams Counties. Many men and women around Brooks were her former pupils. In the late twenties, Jessie attended and graduated from State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
She joined the M. E. Church at Brooks at an early age and was very active in church affairs and teaching a class as long as her health permitted. Her nearest relatives are three cousins, Mrs. Mary Price of Walker, Mrs. Roscoe Roberts of Green, Kansas, and C. W. Shipley of Nodaway. Relatives attending funeral services from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Lowell A. Dudley and Mrs. Geo. E. Madison of Cedar Rapids, and Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Roberts of Green Kansas.
Services were held Friday, November 23, at 1:30 p.m. from the Brooks Methodist Church with Joe Cook officiating. Music was by Mrs. Harold Hefling, Mrs. Marvin Fuller, and Mrs. Joe Cook. Pall bearers were Chas. Stalders, Ivan Heaton, Loren Fuller, Thel Harlow, Clyde Stillinger, and Harold Westlake. Flower bearers were Mrs. Harold Westlake and Mrs. Chas Stalders. Interment was in the Quincy Cemetery.
