At an early age he started with his parents for the west by boat and the family first stopped at Appanoose County, Iowa and later came with ox-teams to Adams county, where they settled in Douglas Township in the year of 1854 where he grew to manhood and lived with his parents until twenty-six years of age, when he purchased an adjoining 71 acres of wild land which he developed for himself and here he continually made his home until he came to Nodaway in 1915, where he has since lived.
Mr. Bixler was married in December 1876 to Anna Penson. To this union was born one son, Roy Morris Bixler, who is still living. The wife died on August 14, 1893. In January 1895, Mr. Bixler was again married to Mary Beatty of Nodaway, who preceded him in death June 1, 1902. On February 1, 1905 he was united in marriage to Mary Newlin of Decatur County, Iowa, who still survives the husband.
Mr. Bixler was the oldest living child of a large family, two of whom were in the ministry. Three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Leatherman, Mrs. Margaret Shipley, and Lizzie Roberts preceded their brother in death and one sister, Mrs. Lillie Kirk of Nodaway is still living. Mr. Bixler is also survived by his son, Roy M. Bixler and the two grandsons, Ralph and Howard Bixler of Oroville, California, a number of nieces and nephews, and other relatives and by a host of friends who remember him as a kind and honest neighbor.
Mr. Bixler has long been a member of the Methodist Church, at one time being a class leader, and in later years transferring his membership to the Nodaway charge, where he attended services whenever possible. He had been in failing health for many years, but was ever faithful to his tasks. For the past several weeks he was confined to home and grew gradually weaker and the end came Tuesday Afternoon.
Funeral services were held from the home on Thursday afternoon in charge of by Rev. C. S. Bayhoff. Interment in the Oakland Cemetery.
