Walter Taylor, one of three children of Henry S. and Margaret Cramer Taylor, was born in Woodford County, near Peoria,Illinois, on May 24, 1869, and passed away in Iowa State Hospital at Clarinda,Iowa, at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 1952, at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 8 days.
When he was six years old his mother passed away and a year later the remaining family moved to Adams County, Iowa, on a farm near Carbon, where they remained for three years, then moving to another farm in that vicinity. Some years later the family moved to a farm adjoining Quincy, Iowa, which village at that time, was the County Seat of Adams County, where Mr. Taylor attended public school and became a member of the Quincy baseball team.
After a number of years on the farm at Quincy the family moved to another farm in the vicinity of Garden Grove, Iowa, where they remained for two years, then moving to Brooks. In the meantime his father married Sarah Ann Strait, of Douglas Township in Adams County, to which union nine children were born, making a total of twelve children in the family. The three children born in Illinois were Clara, who married William Dearth and lived in Brooks for several years. Mrs. Dearth passed away many years ago. Next was Walter, then Maggie, who married John N.W. Sutton and they resided for many years in Brooks. Mrs. Sutton now lives at Bentley, Iowa. The children of the second marriage of Mr. Taylor's father were Mrs. Minnie Harris, now living at Canton, South Dakota, Edward of Brooks, Charles, now deceased, Frank of Guthrie Center, Iowa, Jake, now deceased, Mrs. Nellie Yost of Corning, Earl of Gravity, Iowa, Pearl, now deceased and Mrs. Grace Vickery of Corning.
On April 29, 1894, Mr. Taylor was married to Maria Louise Romang at his home in Brooks, and to this union three children were born, they being Mary Elizabeth, Carl Duane and Viola May Taylor, all of whom still live in the old home in Brooks. He followed farming during the many years of his active life. About fifteen years ago his health failed to such exent that he was no longer able to preform the strenuous duties incident to active farming, forcing him to retire from all work.
He and his wife attended church services regularly during their married life until illness entered the family, which prevented continuous attendance thereafter.
He was a kind father, attentive to his family, a good citizen in the various communities in which he lived during his mature years and will be missed by all those who knew him. Besides his three children he leaves to mourn his passing many nephews, nieces, cousins and distant relatives.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 4th, 1952, in the Methodist Church in Brooks, Iowa, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Don Cutler. Music was furnished by Arthur White and Arthur Fudge, accompanied by Mrs. Elsie Stalder. Pall bearers were Arthur Odell, Don Mercer, Boyd Freshour, Glen Shewman, Clyde Stillinger and John Mitchell. Burial was in the Brooks Cemetery.
