John Strait died Monday noon February 2, 1914, at his home in Douglas township after a long siege of cancer of the face, mention of which was made last week. The funeral was held the following Wednesday morning, February 4,1914, at the U.B. Church and was conducted by Rev. W.P. Wallace, assisted by Rev. E.E. Finkle. Interment was made in the Baldwin Cemetery.
John Strait was born on March 17, 1834, in Hawkins County, Ohio, and was aged 79 years, 10 months and 15 days. He was married to Miss Rachel Strait in 1858, who suvives him. He enlisted May 2, 1864, as a private in Co. E, 155th Ohio, and served four months. The following fall, he with his wife and children, came to Adams County, Iowa, coming by rail to Afton, Iowa, then by four dfiferent stages to Quincy, Iowa, and settled on the farm in Douglas township where he lived until his death.
To them eleven children were born, six preceding him in death. The living are as follows: William Strait of Alvin, Texas; Mrs. Sarah Ann James of Pond Creek, Oklahoma; John L. Strait of Thressa, Canada; Mrs. Mary M. Barker of Grant City, Missouri; Barney D. Strait of Brooks, Iowa. The last two were at the bedside of their father.
Besides his wife and children he leaves twenty-five grandchildren and many friends who will regret the death of this good man.
