Alvin (Allie) Bieber Goldsmith, son of Edward P. and Mary E. Goldsmith was born near Bushnell, Illinois, November 4, 1872 and passed away in the hospital at Creston, Iowa, January 5, 1941, at the age of 68 years, 2 months, and one day.
In February 1874, he moved with his parents to Adams County, Iowa, where he received his educations. On January 5, 1895, he was united in marriage to Marilla Brown of Brooks, Iowa. They moved to their first home near Prescott, where they lived for two years. Here were born twin sons, Edward P. and James M., who now reside near Corning.
In 1897, they moved to Oklahoma, where they lived for three years, returning to Adams County in 1900, where the following children were born, Oliver A., of Council Bluffs; John Lewis and Francis M. of near Corning, and Rena Lucille, who passed away February 26, 1920. She was the joy of the home and idolized by both parents and brothers.
His wife, Marilla, passed away on Jun 30, 1934 in her home on the Vernon ranch, which they had farmed for nearly 25 years.
On August 30, 1935, he was united in marriage to Loretta McFarland and to this union one daughter, Virginia Edith was born August 30, 1936.
He also leaves to mourn his passing four sisters, Mrs. F. M. Brown, Mrs. H. E. Murdock, both of Brooks; Mrs. Jennie Gillete of Corning; and Mrs. E. A. Tucker of Loveland, Colorado. His brother John, of Ridgeway, Missouri preceded him in death. He also leaves ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and five step-children, Edna Clark, Laverne Larkin, Lenora Smith all of Red Oak; Bessie Rapp of Dubuque, and Floyd at home; a host of nieces and nephews.
He was one who took his obligations seriously and he was upright in his dealings with others. He lived a life of sacrifice for his family and he was never happier than when he could share with his family or aid them in any way that they might enjoy the comforts of life. If he failed it was his regret. He loved Mr. and Mrs. Walter Howard as brother and sister. He will be greatly missed by his family, the community, and his friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, January 7, at 2:00 o'clock at the Methodist Church, Rev. Barnes officiating and burial was in Prairie Rose Cemetery.
The following tribute to Mr. Goldsmith was written by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Howard.
Allie has left us but just for a little while,
Time will swiftly go by and we shall meet him.
In a home where there will be nothing but joy-
Only his tired body is resting here.
Allie in spirit is with his loved ones gone on before,
There no more heart aches can come to him.
To know Allie was to know you had a friend,
He was always ready to lend a helping hand,
To those who needed him,
So today, we know we have lost a very dear friend,
But he is not dead-he's just asleep.
