Another fine citizen passed to his reward last week, when Seth Thomas Kempton, whose illness was mentioned in last week's paper passed from this life Wednesday evening, following a stroke of paralysis which he suffered on Sunday before. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Friday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. E. Treloar, assisted by Rev. E. S. Menoher, pastor of the M. E. Chuch. Music was furnished by a mixed quartette, compossed of Messrs James West, William Barker, and Madames John Madison and M. A. Truloar, with Miss Grace Homan at the piano. The G.A.R. and W.R.C. members attended the funeral in a body. Interment was made in the Prairie Rose Cemetery.
Seth Thomas Kempton was born in Hillsdale, Michigan, February 7, 1839 and departed this life January 5, 1927 at his home in Corning, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 28 days. When seven years of age, Mr. Kempton came with his parents to Dubuque, Iowa and from there they moved to the vicinity of Pikes Peak, Colorado, and thence to Page County, Iowa. There Mr. Kempton enlisted in the First Iowa Cavalry and served in the army about three years. At the close of the war, he was discharged and returned to Iowa. He was married to Miss Mary M. Hess the 4th day of May 1867 and had he lived until May 4th, they would have been married 60 years. To this union four children were born, two girls and two boys. The girls and one boy preceded the father to the eternal home.
Mr. Kempton united with the U. B. Church when a young man and with the Baptist Church at Hopkins, Missouri. When he moved to Corning, about 39 years ago, he and his wife united with the First Baptist Church in Corning and have been honored members ever since. Mr. Kempton was a member of the local G. A. R. He leaves to mourn his faithful wife, one son, E. F. Kempton of Corning, Iowa; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one cousin, W. W. Kempton of Concordia, Kansas, a life long companion and friend and a host of other relatives and friends.
