Edward Franklin Kempton, aged 74, farmer residing 7 1/2 miles southwest of Corning, died in the Creston Hospital bout 1 p.m. Tuesday following injuries which he received in a tractor accident at his farm approximately twenty four hours previous to his death. Attending physicians said that which his injuries were considered critical, they attributed shock following the accident, the chief cause of his death. He was born November 1, 1869 in Nodaway County, Missouri, but lived practically all of his life in this community.
The accident occured about 80 rods south of the Kempton home when Mr. Kempton and his hired man, Ash McMurray were preparing to drag a plow across a ditch which was estimated at approximately 10 feet deep. The tractor had been backed up to the edge of the embankment while the men attached the plow to the tractor with a log chain.
Mr. Kempton then mounted the tractor to pull the plow across the ditch. Apparently the brakes on the wheel of the tractor were not released and when the clutch was thrown in and the power took hold, the machine was thrown sideways and upset sideways and backwards to the ditch. Mr. Kempton was pinned beneath the plow and the tractor.
A physician was immediately called and Kempton was given medical attention. Later, as his suffering seemed to increase, he was taken to the Creston hospital, X-rays and further examination revealed that his injuries consisted of a broken pelvis, two broken ribs on the right side, and minor bruises.
Funeral services will be held from the Iveyville church at two o'clock thursday afternoon and will be in charge of Rev. F. G. Barnes of the Corning Methodist Church.
