Ronald Dean Means, son of Shelburn and Elizabeth Means, was born Sept. 26, 1945 at Creston, Iowa, and entered into rest at his home in Corning, Iowa, March 4, 1985, at the age of 39 years, 5 months and 8 days.
He graduated from Corning High School in 1963. On June 25, 1963 he entered the United States Navy from which he was honorably discharged Sept. 22, 1966. While in the Navy he achieved the rank of Electricians Mate, 3rd Class, and
served on the U.S.S. American, reporting to that aircraft carrier July 18, 1964. He was aboard ship when the ship was commissioned Jan. 23,1965,
After discharge from the Navy, ha returned to Corning and began the Means Electric business. He chose Corning for his home because he knew many of its people and valued its sense of community. He had seen cities the world over during his tour of duty and learned that city life was not for him.
Though he did not marry, he showed his affection for children by cherishing his three nieces and nephew. He delighted in hand-crafting wood toys for them. Working with wood was a constant source of pleasure for him. He restored the beauty of many pieces of furniture and many a gunstock. He also enjoyed playing his electric guitar and talking to his CB friends.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his mother; his brother, Harrison J. of Cleveland, Ohio; his sister, Sue Kingery and husband Dennis of Mount Pleasant; three nieces and one nephew, Dawnelle and Kimberly Kingery and Suzanne and Gregory Means; aunts, uncles and many other relatives and
friends.
Funeral services were held at the Gauthier Funeral Home in Corning March 7 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Kenneth Rummer officiating. Military
rites were conducted by Ourcq Post #117, American
Legion. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Corning.
Music was furnished By Kathleen Cook, organist, and Kathy Schafer, vocalist. Casket bearers were Lyle Wiese, Dallas Walter, Ronald Wetzel, Larry
Haggerty, Donald Drennan, and Gerald Straight.
