Ethel M. Stillinger,87, was born March 24,1906, on a farm near Corning to William and Elba Daggett Gourd and died August 10,1993, at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Services were held August 14 at the Methodist Church in Brooks with the Rev. Gerry Kahler officiating. Burial was in the Brooks Cemetery.
Mrs. Stillinger lived in eastern Colorado as a young girl The family moved when she was two and they lived in a sod house. They returned to the Corning area in 1913. She graduated from the Corning High School in 1924. She married Ivan H. Stillinger in 1930. She was a school teacher in various Adams County Schools for 27 years. Many of those years were spent teaching in the Brooks School. In 1965 she moved to Council Bluffs where she started her second career as a guide at the Historic General Dodge House, conducting tours. She retired at the age of 85.
She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Council Bluffs. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Byron and Theron; and two sisters, Mabel Niner and Blanch Clair. Survivors include a daughter, June (Glen) Mitchell of Council Bluffs; a son, Max (Madge) Stillinger of Altoona; five grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
